Ever Notice How Our Conversations Have Changed?

By Rey Barcelon, MDRT

At some point, reunions stop sounding like competition and start sounding like responsibility, care, and the questions that matter more.

Ever Notice How Our Conversations Have Changed?

One of the quiet signs of growing older is that our conversations begin to change.

I used to dread reunions.

Not because I didn't want to see old friends.

But because they sometimes felt like a competition.

Who's earning more?

Who got promoted?

Who bought a house?

There was always that awkward feeling.

Then something funny happened.

The conversations changed.

Conversations

Someone beside me asks,

Can anyone recommend a good cardiologist?

Suddenly, we're talking about health.

And cholesterol. :)

Someone else needs a reliable contractor.

Another friend is looking for a good pediatrician.

Someone asks about retirement planning.

Another asks about life insurance.

And somehow, nobody finds those conversations boring.

Because everyone understands.

Adulting isn't having all the answers. It's learning which questions matter.

The questions start getting bigger

Our conversations stop being about proving ourselves.

They become about taking care of ourselves.

Or more importantly, taking care of the people who depend on us.

  • Parents
  • Family
  • Even our employees

The people who quietly became our why.

What was once personal becomes bigger than ourselves.

Priorities change quietly

Perhaps that's why our priorities begin to change.

Health becomes more valuable than status.

Peace of mind becomes more valuable than appearances.

We realize that earning is only the beginning.

One day, without even noticing, we begin thinking about what we'll leave behind.

Responsibility

Growing older isn't about becoming less exciting. It's about becoming responsible for more people.

Maybe this is what Adulting 101 looks like

Looking back, I don't think reunion conversations became boring.

I think they became more meaningful.

Maybe this is what Adulting 101 really looks like.

Having a greater love that prepares.

Learning to protect.

Learning to care.

And perhaps that's one of the quietest signs that we've grown up.
